The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS (HPAA) is an initiative of Manhattan Arts International, an organization launched in 1983 to promote emerging artists. HPAA is a growing global community of artists, advocates, and writers dedicated to raising awareness about how ART serves as a positive catalyst for enhancing the well-being of individuals, society and the environment. We believe that ART & ARTISTS have the power to heal, inspire, provoke, challenge and offer hope and bring positive change to the world.
Our Audience: HPAA has become one of the most popular positive art related websites on the Internet. Our audience is international and widespread. As one of the pioneers in promoting art as a healing modality for decades we have developed a respected position among a general audience that shares our belief in addition to artists, healthcare professionals, writers, galleries and educators specializing in healing art.
Comments and Praise: As internationally recognized arts writer Edward Rubin states about The Healing Power of ART website, “It’s filled with awe-inspiring essays. Hope, optimism and beautiful thoughts is just what is needed to remind us that there is still good in the world and that all is not lost.” Read comments about HPAA.
About the Founder: HPAA was launched by Renée Phillips in 2015, the Founder and Director of Manhattan Arts International, ManhattanArts.com. Prior to developing online exhibitions she organized dozens of exhibitions in NYC focused on “The Healing Power of Art”. She was the founder and editor-in-chief of Manhattan Arts International, a major art magazine in NYC, NY, from 1983-2020. She is the author of several art books.
As a staunch artist’s advocate Renée has served on the advisory boards of several non-profit arts organizations including the UNCF “The Art of Giving Back” and New York Artists Equity Association. She has been a member of the prestigious Art Critics Association of America (AICA-USA) and her articles have appeared in leading art magazines, websites, and gallery catalogues. Currently, she focuses on writing articles on this website, on Manhattan Arts International, and Renee-Phillips.com.
As a student at The Art Student’s League in NYC, NY she launched “Artopia” and organized group exhibitions to help fellow artists get exposure throughout NYC, in such venues as Lincoln Center, Chase Manhattan Bank, Studio 54, and many art galleries and alternative art venues. During this time she organized the only art political debate in the history of NYC among art leaders. She also served on one of the NYC mayor’s “Excellence in the Arts” advisory boards.
Renée has presented many lectures and keynote speeches in such venues as the Art Institute of Chicago, Heckscher Museum, Columbia University, National Arts Club, New York University, Artists Talk on Art, and New York Foundation For The Arts. She designed a series of art and business courses for Marymount Manhattan College and for 7 years she presented “How to Get Into New York Art Galleries”, a course at The Learning Annex.

Hi there! I’m working with a talented high school student who has created her own non-profit Sisters Blooming. Their mission is to be a platform to show creative expressions for those who identify as immigrant women/girls or refugee/asylee women.
The Blooming Voices Project is looking for contributors. They are looking for any form of self-expression ranging from a painting, poem, photography, etc. The works will be exhibited on the Sisters Blooming website and in the downloadable pdf magazine format (see website for further details regarding the project).
Would your organization be willing to partner with them? Do you know of any individuals that would like to contribute their work to the project?
Let me know if you are interested (or have any questions) and I can connect you with my student who is heading up this effort. She is passionate about this project and would love the connection!
Thank you in advance!

Dear Renee,
I do love your work and this beautiful website: The Healing Power of Art. I have designed an embroidered representation of the Seven Chakras and it is now being made by a women’s co-operative in Kashmir as part of their collective act of resilience in the face of the adversity of living in a conflict zone. Would it be possible to enter a textile exhibit for September’s The Healing Power of Art online Exhibition – Resilience theme? Thank you.
Renee Phillips says
Dear Amber, Thank you for your interest in our call for artists for “Resilience 2022”. Your project seems like a wonderful endeavor. If I understand your question correctly you are interested in submitting an exhibition of artwork, not single works of art that you have created. If that is the correct understanding, then I’m sorry, we cannot accept an exhibition. I hope this answers your question. If you wanted to submit artwork you created yourself, that would be acceptable.
ARCHANA SANTRA says
My name is Archana Santra. I am interested in placing my paintings in your on line gallery. Thanks.
Renee Phillips says
Dear Archana, Thank you for visiting and your comment. Our membership is currently filled to capacity, although we have calls for artists for our online exhibitions. Here is a link to learn more about them.

Greetings from Canada! I am a classical composer of music intended to uplift humankind. A friend just sent me the link to your website and it looks very interesting. But I am wondering if music has a role to play in this organization.
Best wishes for the holidays and new year!
Renee Phillips says
Dear Joanna, Thank you for visiting and your comment. The healing power of music is undeniable as are all of the artistic disciplines and expressions. The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS is an initiative of Manhattan Arts International, founded in 2000 to promote visual artists. At this time we don’t have plans to include additional art disciplines. However, that doesn’t rule out the possibility in the future. Best wishes for a joyful 2022!

Some of these amazing pieces touch my soul. I will never be fortunate enough to own my favorite piece, so I will view it, and others, on the computer daily, to let my soul smile 🙂
Karen Porter White says
I appreciate the quotes and letters as I absolutely believe that “Art Saves Lives”–I know people who’ve been saved. Most of us, (especially now) need to be reminded that beauty exists, that art transforms the hideous , the mundane and the unknowable into something which is stimulating and nurturing even when not verbalized.
Many thanks!

We are so happy to have discovered your site whose goals are so in line with our own in terms of what we hope people get out of viewing my husband’s’ artwork. We plan to submit images for the upcoming Power of Color online exhibition for your consideration. We have exhibited my husband, John Davis Held’s artwork at the art gallery at The National Institutes of Health and donated artwork to our local hospital emergency room, both of which were warmly and enthusiastically received. Thank you in advance for taking a look at his artwork. We believe it is healing indeed.

Dear healing-power-of-art.org team,
I just stumbled upon your article published on healing-power-of-art.org https://www.healing-power-of-art.org/chris-jordan-environmental-photographer-of-mass-consumption. This article on Chris Jordan – Environmental Photographer of Mass Consumption caught my attention and really resonated to me, and I wanted to thank you for raising environmental awareness on such issues among the population.
Please also let me introduce the Art & Environnement Association, and see if you would be interested in knowing more about this association, whose misión is in line with the objectives of healing-power-of-art.org. The projects carried by Art & Environnement Association should probably interest your audience, and I would be happy to provide you with additional information and photos if you wish.
Many thanks for your time, kind regards,
Samuel Husson
Renee Phillips says
Thank you Sam for informing us about the Art & Environment Association. I’m waiting for a reply from you to an email in which I asked for the organization’s website so we can consider adding it to our Resource Directory of Art & Healing Organizations & Programs or writing an article about it. Best regards, Renee

Dear Mark, Welcome to The Healing Power of ART & ARTISTS website. I hope you enjoy reading the articles here and viewing the wide variety of artwork. We are not a physical gallery. Our objective is to use the power of the internet on this website to share the art and statements from artists who share our mission to raise awareness that art has the capacity to heal individuals, society and the environment. At this time, we aren’t accepting any new members; however, we are currently inviting artists from around the world to submit their art to our online art exhibition. I hope this reply answers your question.
Darlene Watson says
A broken marriage of 25 years, or as Dr Phil would say a marriage that was not right in the first place exploded and finished but with that, it opened a door for my creativity to spread its wings and fly. I have been soaring ever since. It is like all these ideas, thoughts and my imagination needed something (at the time horrible) to happen in order for me to be free to explore what I have come to realize is my life purpose. I feel I am doing what I was always meant to be doing. Art healed my broken heart and Art has given me the courage to be me. That creative soul that does most of my communicating through colour.
Renee Phillips says
Wow, Darlene, what a wonderful positive attitude and description you give about your transformation. I agree, we learn the most from our greatest challenges, struggles and heartbreaks. Now that you’ve realized your life purpose I wish you creative abundance, love and joy! Best, Renee
