Peter N. Van Giesen
Blue Mountains Coastal Range, acrylic, 24″ x 24″
Nature is ever changing and in a way fragile yet strong and enduring. A model for us as reminder of our own resilience and mortality. Naturally, I am drawn to the mystery that is implicit in the natural world. I feel more spiritually alive when outside. peternvangiesen.com
Bren Sibilsky
Communing With Creator, Clay, 15.5″ x 8″ x 19″
Quiet moments with Creator give me the gift of self-reflection, which contains the seeds of change and the saving grace of promise and renewal. Wisdom forged and developed from the inner fire of perseverance strengthens personal metal fortitude. Adversity from change empowers my will and develops courage born of wisdom. brensculpture.com
Keith Morant
Morantivirus, mixed media on canvas, 30″ x 30″
In these troubled times of unreliable politicians and a raging pandemic, we must all look to new strength for our continued survival. The key word is resilience to all that may befall and art is especially valuable as a statement to that end. Resilience through our creative power is the strongest opposition to the destructive elements that threaten us. morantart.com
Debora Levy
Rethink, mixed media, 36″ x 24″ x 1.5″
My intention is to explore human condition and behavior in our natural state. I highlight the prosperity of individual human virtues, qualities and characteristics. My technique incorporates patterns in a unique way that create rhythm and ambiguity resulting in a surreal abstraction of human feelings. deboralevyart.com
Dick and Rosanne
Lotus Night, photography, 40″ x 30″
Nothing in nature signifies resilience more than the lotus. That it has been here for more than 145 million would alone make it a good candidate. But it is also associated with the symbol of rebirth as it will emerge from murky ponds to emerge as a beautiful blooming flower. It always brings us joy to see. dickandrosanne.com
Laurie Marshall
Restorative Justice Singing Tree, acrylic on wood, and colored pencil on paper, 8 feet x 16 feet.
Resilience depends on creating “The Beloved Community”, which includes all the beings on our planet and the elements that support life – earth, air, fire and water. This piece was a collective effort which I facilitated. 15 immigrant youth helped design and paint this image portraying Restorative Justice, the four elements, and celebrating Oakland, California. soulemporium.com
Editor’s note: For almost 30 years, Laurie Marshall has made murals and dramas with children in public, private and alternative schools.
